Hreflang Checker

Free hreflang checker — validate the hreflang annotations of any multilingual page: language codes, duplicates, self-reference, x-default and return links.

How it works

  1. Enter a URL, ideally of a multilingual page, e.g. example.com/es/.
  2. We extract all hreflang annotations and validate the language and region codes and their targets.
  3. We also fetch up to 5 referenced pages to verify the return links point back correctly.

Features

  • Validates ISO language and region codes, including region-case mistakes
  • Checks duplicates, relative URLs and self-referencing entries
  • Verifies x-default presence and return links on up to 5 targets
  • Clear pass/fail rows showing the exact value found

FAQ

What is hreflang?
hreflang tells search engines which language and region a page targets, so the right version appears in each market search results.
What is return link checking?
Google requires hreflang to be reciprocal: if page A points to page B, page B must point back to page A. Missing return links make annotations invalid.
Why validate language codes?
Codes must follow ISO 639-1 (language) and ISO 3166-1 Alpha 2 (region, always uppercase, e.g. en-US). Typos silently break the whole annotation set.
Is it free?
Yes, completely free with no signup. Results are cached for one hour.
